Above: a banner the Palestinian resistance has raised in Gaza in response to Trump’s calls for ethnic cleansing
Every part of today’s U.S. foreign policy is about trying to undermine China, because the PRC’s rise is the central threat to Washington’s dominance. Since U.S. monopoly capital keeps finding itself outcompeted by China, our imperialist deep state increasingly desires to bring a war in East Asia, and has been preparing for this in both Taiwan and Korea. The problem the imperialists face is that they’re already fighting too many battles for an East Asia conflict to be strategically sound. Given how many resources Washington is now putting into eastern Europe and West Asia, a war with China would be guaranteed to backfire on the U.S. That’s the dilemma Trump is trying to solve through his Gaza ethnic cleansing plan; if Gaza becomes empty of Palestinians, then the costs of Washington’s West Asia commitments will be reduced, and the empire’s larger goals will become more reachable.
The Palestinian resistance has ensured the empire won’t be able to overcome this obstacle, because it’s become apparent that the people of Gaza will never leave. If the Zionist entity’s multiple invasions of Gaza, record bombings, and engineered starvation have failed to eliminate the armed Palestinian coalition, then anything the entity does next in Gaza can only further weaken Zionism. All of the world owes massive gratitude to the Palestinians for waging this fight; their defiance against this extermination campaign is a crucial factor that’s preventing the empire from starting a new big war.
The imperialist enemy has recently gained a series of tactical victories; it’s overthrown Assad, crippling the Axis of Resistance and opening the region up to greater Zionist aggressions. Yet these events have exposed the enemy’s limitations, because though Washington has gotten rid of Assad, in the process it’s committed itself to another major military project. A project that the East Asia war planners wish Washington could finish, but keeps taking up more of the empire’s focus.
Everything the Zionist entity does as part of its “Greater Israel” land theft effort, Washington will have to go along with it. As Syria’s fall emboldens the entity, the hegemon is obliged to assist the self-destructive adventures of a collapsing Nazi state. And the variable that’s made the entity so internally vulnerable is the Palestinian resistance. Netanyahu has momentarily de-prioritized Gaza because within so-called “Israel,” society can no longer function as normal, and the military has been suffering as well. In all areas, from economics to energy to armed forces morale, Zionism has become perilously unstable. In response, the Trump White House has adopted a new strategy: concentrate the entity’s efforts within Syria, with the goal of applying more stress upon Russia. Then, hope the neocons, Russia will be brought back into Washington’s orbit, leaving China more vulnerable to the hegemon’s next attacks.
When the entity inevitably invades Gaza again, this plan will be disrupted, with Washington then being forced to spend more time on fighting the Palestinians. And it’s not just time that the enemy will lose due to this; it will lose more international allies, it will lose more psychological control, and it will lose more strength for its Zionist proxy. In this last year-and-a-half, we’ve seen “Israel” lose traditional allies like Colombia, seen the USA’s masses largely reject the anti-Palestine propaganda, and seen Zionist colonizer society be brought towards existential crisis. All of these trends will accelerate with Zionism’s next attempt to exterminate the Palestinians. That’s why Washington has been investing so much into Turkey: “Israel” cannot survive, so the hegemon will need to replace it with a new big West Asian proxy. In reaction to what the Palestinians have done, the enemy is scrambling.
This doesn’t mean the imperial threat the region faces will inevitably go away, though; Turkey has shown itself to be a highly effective imperial tool. Turkey was what the U.S. used to bring down Assad. And should Russia grow closer with Turkey, a large part of Washington’s mission to sway Russia will be fulfilled. If we in the United States act complacent, and wait for the globe’s anti-imperialist forces to defeat Washington on their own, then the outcome will be that much of the world gets destabilized. China will keep building up its economy regardless, and peoples like the Palestinians and the Yemenis won’t be defeated; but the cost of our inaction will be an incalculable loss of human life.
The empire seeks to create many more Gazas, or Sudans, or Libyas; its strategy is to spread as much bloodshed and chaos as possible. In the couple months since Assad left, it’s done this to the Syrian people, installing a Salafist reactionary regime that rules through terror and is ethnically cleansing the Alawite people. Our class enemies want to make this kind of barbarism into the global normal, more so than they’ve already done. They can’t stop China from continuing to rise; but if this plan of theirs succeeds, then the multipolarity we get will be one where capital can further delay its defeat, exterminating much of the globe’s people in the process.
This is what Haim Bresheeth-Žabner of the Electronic Intifada has warned of in response to Trump’s ethnic cleansing proposal:
Today’s genocide, made possible by the funding, arms and active support of the declining West, especially the US and EU, is intended as an object lesson for the rest of humanity: You either follow orders, or you perish horribly. This is a huge challenge to humanity and its future. It cannot be ignored. The coming together of the richest man in the world and the Zionized tyrant of capitalist hubris is a call for action that must be heeded. Islamophobia is being used to attack Palestine as a symbol of struggle for Arabs and Muslims. But this will not end with Palestine, or Panama, or Greenland or Canada and Mexico. This is a global threat to all of us. Trump has now tossed a glove into the international arena. Humanity must rise to meet that challenge, and must unite against the tyranny of raw power. If this challenge to our humanity, values and fragile system of international law and principles of justice is ignored, we shall all end up as serfs to the declining power – and the declining rationality – of the West.
These things represent one aspect of the situation we’re now in; the aspect where the imperialists and fascists are increasingly going on the offensive, and attempting to take millions or tens of millions of lives while destroying entire civilizations. Multipolarity entails an international sphere that’s been opened up to countless new possibilities, both good and bad. In the time of breakdown that we’ve entered into, states are being freed up to behave however they want, and borders can change with ever-more ease. That’s why a contradiction can exist where the hegemon is in decline, yet keeps expanding its global destructive campaign; the explanation is that the empire is collapsing, so it’s working to take the rest of the world down with it.
The anti-imperialist side has also been taking advantage of this unraveling, with Russia having permanently gained almost one-fifth of Ukraine’s former territory. And Russia’s success in beating back the hegemon has helped inspire multiple global revolutionary forces, namely the Sahel anti-colonial movement and the Palestinian resistance. Everywhere, the revolutionary forces are fighting back; even in places like Libya, Sudan, and Syria, there continue to be those who resist the empire and its proxies.
These are the hopeful realities we must consider while we assess the enemy’s genocidal onslaught. It’s why the demise of “international law,” at least as we’ve known it under the paradigm of liberal hegemony, is not necessarily a bad thing. From the start, liberal “international law” has failed to protect the Palestinians, or the many others who’ve experienced genocide at the empire’s hands; this “international law” has predominantly been a tool for the imperialists to classify those who challenge them as criminals. When the USA’s people have overthrown their imperial state; and America has become able to join with China in building a cooperative global relations system; we’ll have true international law.
As we in the empire’s heart work to build up our revolutionary movement, we need to understand that we’re not alone, and that many of our global allies are growing in their strength. In the end the reactionaries will be defeated, and socialism will triumph in all corners of the globe; these things will happen when we’ve managed to fully take advantage of multipolarity, and beaten the enemy amid this heightened state of conflict.
